• Q1. Why are some AIB branches no longer handling cash or cheques?

  In line with evolving banking landscapes and how customers chose to bank with us, we are changing the way we serve our customers, which ensures we retain a strong presence in all communities.   

   

  Here at AIB we’ve seen a reduction in some of the ways our customers use our branches. More customers are banking online, using our mobile app and making contactless payments. At the same time, we’ve found that customers are using over-the-counter cash services less and less. These are global trends in the way customers choose to interact with their banks. 

  • In AIB, 28% fewer people visited us in person in 2020 than in 2019. It’s not expected this will reverse.
  • Branch visits are declining due to a shift towards digital methods to bank and shop. 
  • This trend began before the pandemic but accelerated during it. A 5-10 year predicted change catapulted into one. 
  • Digital payments are up over 300%.
  • Account opening online has doubled. 
• Q2. How many branches are changing?

  There will be 22 Branches without cheque or cash handling facilities by the end of 2021.

• Q3. What branches are changing?

  17 locations are changing in 2021.  These are Ardee, Ballymun, Blackrock, Blarney, Blessington, Cabra, Callan, Clane, Fethard, Leixlip, Lisduggan, Malahide, Manorhamilton, Rathkeale, South Richmond Street, Swinford & Trim.

  5 locations continue to operate without over the counter and / or cash and cheque lodgement machine services. These branches are the IFSC, Tallaght Hospital, Grand Canal Dock, Carrickmines & Supervalu Lucan.

  All other branches will continue to operate as full-service branches.

• Q4. What changes are happening to this branch?

  This location will no longer offer:

  • Cash services over the counter, this includes cash, cheques, coin, foreign exchange and bank draft services. 

   

  If you avail of services such as a Night Safe or Drop Safe, these will be available at any other full-service AIB branch. To find details of your nearest full-service AIB branch please refer to Q3.

  Customers can also use digital alternatives and, in the case of businesses, iBB and merchant services. 

   

  This location will continue to offer: 

  • Services at cash and cheque lodgement machines.
  • Kiosks & self-service phones will still be available at this branch, as will any existing external ATMs.
  • All other services will remain in place.
• Q5. Do I need to do anything right now?

  Personal & Business Customers:

  AIB at An Post - If you chose to transact at your local  Post office you will require an AIB debit card or an AIB personalised lodgement book with a barcode. 

  If you do not have an AIB Debit Card, please call 01 269 5022.  Please note, charges apply yearly for holding a debit card.  If you do not have an AIB personalised lodgement book with a barcode, please call 0818 724 724.  Alternatively, you can visit your AIB branch with photo id, and we will be happy to help.

  Business Customers:

  You may need to make an arrangement with the nearest full-service branch for the provision of drop/nightsafe services.  

  Should you wish to use An Post for large cash lodgements, please arrange through your local AIB Branch.

• Q6. Why are some branches changing and some not?

  We are switching some branches operating models from traditional ways of banking to those we believe better serve our customers as we progress, based on consistent changes in banking patterns. 

• Q7. Should I switch my account to another AIB Branch?

  You can continue to access your account in any AIB branch, online, on our mobile app or through Phone Banking. You don’t need to do anything. None of your banking details, such as account numbers and sort codes will change. 

• Q8. Will I keep my account number(s) and sort code?

  Yes, nothing will change on your account. 

• Q9. Does my local branch have an external cash & cheque lodgement machine?

• Q10. Do I need to make an appointment to visit a branch?

  To carry out cash and cheque transactions at any full-service AIB branch, you will not need to make an appointment. 

  If you require support, please feel free to drop in and talk to a member of our team.

  For mortgage or investment advice we would advise that you make an appointment to ensure we give you the time required to explain the steps involved and answer any questions you may have.  You can book an appointment on our website, over the phone or by dropping in to your local branch.

• Q12. When will my branch services change?

• Q13. Where is my nearest designated Post Office?

• Q14. What is a 'designated' post office, and what does it offer compared to all other post offices?

  At designated post office locations you can lodge cheques to your AIB accounts using your AIB Debit Card or your AIB personalised lodgement book with a barcode. A list of designated post offices are available here.

• Q15 When will a cheque lodged to my account via AIB at An Post appear in my account?

  Cheques lodged at the designated Post Offices will not be deemed credited to an AIB account until received by AIB, which should be on the next business day after the lodgement has been processed by An Post and subject to the lodgement being made up to 15 minutes before the latest time of posting** (which is displayed in the Post Office) at the An Post outlet. Lodgements received by An Post after this time or on a non AIB business day (e.g. a Saturday) will be received and processed by AIB two business days after the lodgement is received by An Post. Though credited to an account when paid in, you should not use the funds until they have cleared.

• Q16. How will I know what AIB branches will offer which services?

  All impacted branches are listed here. All of our other branches will continue to provide the same service as they always have.  

• Q17. Is the ATM being removed?

  No, all existing external ATMs will remain in place.

• Q18. Can I complete transactions at cash and cheque lodgment machines?

  Yes, cheque and cash transactions (excluding coin) can be processed at the automated machines in this branch.

• Q19. Can I still use my debit card and cheque book?

  Yes. There will be no change to debit cards and cheque books. If however, you wish to cash a cheque then you will need to visit the nearest full-service AIB branch.

• Q20. Will my standing orders and direct debits continue as normal?

  Yes. There will be no change to these payment services.

• Q.21 Can I use any other full service AIB branch to carry out transactions?

  Yes. To find details of your nearest full-service AIB branch please refer to Q3.  

• Q22. Will my registration number and PIN remain the same to access 24 hour banking?

  Yes. There will be no change.

• Q23. Will the remainder of my banking activities remain as they are now?

  Yes, these changes only affect teller assisted services.

• Q24. What do I need to do to use services in a different AIB branch?

  You can use services in any full-service AIB branch in our network. However, if you require Business services, e.g nightsafe/dropsafe facilities, please visit your AIB branch with photo ID and we will be happy to help.

• Q25. What can I do at a Cash & Cheque Lodgement machine?

  You can lodge a maximum of 25 cheques and, typically, up to 120 notes in one transaction.

• Q26. If my branch services have changed, what can I now avail of at my designated post office?

  Personal Customers

  • Take out up to €1,500 cash per day from your AIB current Account using your AIB debit Card.
  • Pay your AIB Credit Card bill with cash or debit card using the credit transfer attached to the bill.
  • Lodge cash using your AIB Debit Card or an AIB personalised lodgement book with a barcode.
  •  Lodge up to €200 in coins per week, once they are sorted and bagged.
  • Also, at designated post offices only, you can lodge cheques to your AIB account using your AIB Debit Card or your AIB personalised lodgement book with a barcode. A list of designated post offices are available here

  Business Customers 

  • Take out up to €1,500 cash per day from your AIB current Account using your AIB debit Card.
  • Lodge up to €5,000 per week in cash to your AIB account. Lodgements from €5,000 to €40,000 can be made at the post office, if you arrange it in advance through your local AIB branch.
  • Take out up to €1,500 in coin, once it is pre-ordered
  • Lodge up to €200 in coins per week, once they are sorted and bagged.
  • Also, at designated post offices only, you can lodge cheques to your AIB Business Current Account. A lodgement can contain up to 50 cheques and any individual cheque cannot be greater than €50,000. 

  Cheque lodgement transactions can only be carried out at designated post offices. All other listed transactions can be carried out at any post office nationwide.

   

  An Post can only accept AIB personalised lodgement books with a barcode for your account, or AIB Personal/ Business debit cards to carry out lodgements.

• Q27. Where can I go now to lodge cash and cheques?

  You can lodge cash & cheques at the cash and cheque lodgement machines at your current branch. In addition, you will have full access to your account in any full service AIB branch and in designated post offices.

• Q28. Where can I access a night safe/drop safe?

  You can access these services at your nearest full-service AIB branch.

  If you require Business services, e.g nightsafe/dropsafe facilities, please speak to a member of staff in your current branch who will assist in arranging these for you.

• Q29. Where can I get foreign exchange services?

  Foreign Exchange services can be accessed at your nearest full-service AIB branch.

• Q30. My business still receives payment in cash. Where can I lodge this now?

  You can lodge cash to your account at this branch via the cash and cheque lodgement machine (limits apply), in any full-service AIB branch (any amount) and in any An Post office up to  €5,000 per week. Amounts above €5,000 and up to €40,000 can be lodged at An Post by prior arrangement with your local AIB branch.

• Q31. Can I still accept cheques for goods and services? Can they be lodged to my account?

  Yes.  You can lodge cheques to your account via the cash and cheque lodgement machine at your current branch. Alternatively you can lodge cheques in any full-service AIB branch and in designated An Post offices nationwide.

• Q32. What if I have over €200 in coins to lodge weekly? It’s too much for the post office.

  You can lodge coin at any full-service AIB branch.

• Q33. Where can I find out about using internet banking, mobile banking or phone banking?

  You can find out about Ways to Bank here or visit any branch to speak to a member of staff.
  

• Q34. When will cash lodged in An Post appear in my AIB account?

  Cash lodged at An Post to  AIB accounts with AIB Debit Card or an AIB personalised lodgement book with barcode prior to 17.30 hours in an An Post Outlet on weekdays will be credited to the AIB account on the same day.

  Cash lodged on Saturdays while available on the same day, will be posted to the account on the next AIB business day.  In a small number of the late evening An Post Outlets or in the Swords PO on a Sunday, cash lodged after 17:30 hours will be credited to the account the next AIB business day.

  For security purposes, a maximum limit applies to the amount of cash that may be lodged in a single transaction, this cash limit may be subject to variation from time to time and also between Post Office outlets. If the amount of cash in customers’ lodgements exceeds this maximum limit, they will be advised by the Postmaster.

• Q35. How can I withdraw from a deposit account (if this is the only account I have with AIB) when I do not have a debit card?

  You can withdraw from your deposit account at any full-service AIB branch. Alternatively, visit your branch where a staff member is on hand to support you with opening a current account if you wish, giving you access to a debit card and online/mobile banking. This means that you will also be able to transact at An Post offices nationwide. Please be aware that a current account may incur quarterly fees & charges.

• Q36. Will my charges for lodgements/withdrawals go up?

  There are no changes to our current Fees & Charges. Cash & cheque lodgements will need to be lodged separately at An Post. Our fees and charges will apply to each lodgement.  Please note, if you choose to use our services at An Post – these are categorised as ‘Staff Assisted’ transactions. • Q37. What is the impact on fees for business customers if the customer uses another full service AIB branch?

  There are no changes to our current Fees & Charges.  
  

• Q38. What is the impact on fees for business customers if the customer uses An Post?

  There are no changes to our current Fees & Charges. Cash & cheque lodgments must be lodged seperately at An Post. AIB Fees & Charges will apply to each lodgment.  Transactions at An Post are staff assisted transactions incurring a fee of 39c, self-service transactions i.e. cash & cheque lodgment machines incur a fee of 35c.

• Q39. As a result of this change, does AIB intend to increase their Fees & Charges?

  We continue to review all aspects of our business on an ongoing basis. AIB has no plans to increase their Fees and Charges at this time.

• Q40. Are business customers treated any differently in An Post?

  Yes. Business customers have an enhanced SME offering whereby they can use the An Post Off Counter facility to lodge up to €40,000 per week (subject to prior arrangement through your local AIB branch) and that is in addition to customers being able to lodge €5,000 per week on an ad hoc basis. There is also an enhanced coin offering for our customers: withdrawals of up to €200 on demand (subject to availability) and a Coin ordering service up to €1500. Furthermore the Cash Withdrawal limit has been increased to €1500 across the entire An Post network of 900+ locations. Your Relationship Manager/Branch Manager are available to discuss your business's individual needs.

• Q41. What are the options available to Business Customers who need to make regular lodgements?

  AIB will continue to offer full service branches in a number of locations, where customers can carry out regular lodgements.

  AIB at An Post - All post office locations will accept lodgements of up to €5,000 per week. In addition An Post has an Off-Counter offering which caters for amounts up to €40,000 by prior arrangement through your local AIB branch.
