A few years ago I vividly remember taking part in a 'bonding session' with the Tipperary hurlers that was facilitated by some members of the armed forces. It started with a one-hour physical training session including sprints, tug-of-war and wrestling. I thought this might be the height of it, but we were only getting started.

As of January 1 2017, the mark is law in Gaelic football. In the Official Guide, it is defined as follows: “When a player catches the ball cleanly from a kick-out without it touching the ground, on or past the 45m line nearest the kick-out point, he shall be awarded a ‘mark’ by the referee. The player awarded a ‘mark’ shall have the options of (a) Taking a free kick or (b) Playing on immediately.”

Incredibly, Slaughtneil are on the road once again as they travel to Greenford in London.

The All-Ireland double-chasing side are expected to come through but St Vincent’s will be the other huge favourites of the weekend.

As the final provincial titles are decided, so too will the provinces collide in Nenagh, Parnell Park and Semple Stadium.

Seaghan Kearney: Reigning by numbers

In November 2010, my mates had a month’s mind for me. It was their way of helping me get over a traumatic event that I was lucky to recover from.

Rewind to October 10: the day I had an incident of Sudden Adult Death Syndrome (SADS) during a game of five-a-side at the hall in my local club, St Oliver Plunkett's Eoghan Ruadh. After a massive cardiac arrest, I dropped dead on the floor. A defibrillator, some quick thinking, and the chance presence of a fireman, Terry O'Brien, all helped to save my life.

I’ve huge concerns about where Galway football is going. There’s competition coming in from all angles and when you think about the symptoms of our downfall coming together, it’s worrying. We won the Connacht football championship last year but we haven’t been challenging for success in the way we should be. I appreciate that no team can stay at the top table all the time but we haven’t even been close. The conveyor belt within Galway is slowing down and that’s a point I want to build on.
