Trying to decide where to head off on holiday this summer? Well, why settle for just one place? A road trip is the perfect way to tick some must-see destinations off your bucket list while enjoying the open road and breathtaking views for miles. And with lots of beautiful European destinations located close together, the ultimate driving adventure is easily achievable.

Depending on how much time you have, Europe opens up a lot of options. But whichever route you take, don’t steer clear of the beauty that Italy, France and Spain have to offer. Read on for our top picks for the ultimate summer road trip in these beautiful countries.

Lean into Cultural Adventure in Italy

Start big and kick off your road trip in Florence, the capital of Italy’s picturesque Tuscany region. Some of the world’s most famous works of art call this city home - most notably Michelangelo’s David - so it’s

the perfect spot to get a cultural fix during your adventure. Before you get started, spend a few hours getting lost in the meandering streets which boast glorious cathedrals, fountains and statues.

When you’re ready to move on, hop in the car and enjoy a short drive (around 90 minutes) to experience another side of Tuscany in Pisa. Your main stop here will be the iconic leaning tower, but there are lots of other treasures that make Pisa one of Europe’s most-loved destinations. From breathtaking Renaissance palaces to Gothic churches, this artistic city is full of elaborate beauty. It also has a lively social scene thanks to the scores of students attending Pisa University, which has been around since 1343. If you’re stopping for the night, why not treat yourself to some authentic Italian gelato? We’re particularly partial to a scoop of pistachio.

Say Bonjour to France

Next, put Italy in your rear-view mirror and say bonjour to the beautiful south of France. A drive from Pisa to Cannes will take you approximately four and a half hours, but there are plenty of places to stop along the way including the port city of Genoa. The perfect layover if you haven’t had your fill of ‘The Boot.’

From there, head straight for your next stop. Lined with sandy beaches, Cannes is definitely a playground for the rich and famous. From Hollywood stars to Russian oligarchs, it’s the perfect place to top up your tan and do a little celebrity spotting.

A two-hour drive along a scenic coastal route will lead you to Marseille, a colourful and multicultural city with a great nightlife scene. Head straight to the port for the best choice of restaurants, bars and cafés.

Catalonian Dreams

It’s possible to drive from Marseille to Barcelona but it’s likely to take over five hours. Where you stop along the way depends on whether you’d like to see more of France or cross into Spain. If you want to see more of France, then Perpignan is a great half-way spot to spend a night. A very affordable destination, this city is greatly influenced by its proximity to Spain in both its medieval architecture and its gastronomy.

Another hidden gem on the way to Barcelona is Girona, a wonderful destination for history fans. The famous cathedral is a must-see for a fascinating insight into the religious roots that give this city its personality.

Finish off your journey in Barcelona, the vibrant capital of Catalonia. There’s no better place to end your road trip than this metropolis of culture, art, food, and music. Spend a few days here soaking up the city - enjoy the beach, the affordable tapas and wine, and the architecture - including La Sagrada Família and La Pedrera.
