New York State of Mind: 5 Big Apple Experiences

Aerial view of NYC with skyscrapers and the surrounding sea.

One of the most iconic places in the world, New York really is is a must-visit destination. From the bright lights of Manhattan to the laid-back feel of Brooklyn, it’s a city of a thousand faces – and a thousand experiences. Planning a visit can seem pretty overwhelming, especially if you only have a few days to fit all the fun in, so we’ve created a handy guide to help you make the best of your time in the Big Apple.

The High Line

New York City’s only elevated park is a real gem. Beginning at Gansevoort Street and ending at West 34th Street, this unusual green space was converted from an abandoned railway line last used in 1980 and first opened to the public in 2009. It’s unique way to take in the city, and there are always cultural and family events happening - from Tai Chi classes to salsa parties. Some of our favourite spots in the park include the relaxing wildflower field and the unbeatable view of the bustling streets at the Tiffany & Co. Foundation Overlook. After your explorations, chances are you might be peckish. We recommend you visit the nearby Chelsea Market for currywurst, sushi and everything in between.

The Brooklyn Bridge

If you only do one thing while in New York, a stroll across the Brooklyn Bridge is a pretty great choice. The views of the skyline are stunning, and the entire walk takes about an hour to get from one side to the other. But if you’d prefer a zippier experience you can bike the bridge in less than 15 minutes. You’ll have lots of great photo opportunities as you make your way across, but watch out for cyclists and other pedestrians when you’re taking snaps. Once you get to Brooklyn, cool down with an ice-cream from Ample Hills Creamery - try the butter pecan brittle. After that, why not take a boat trip back from Brooklyn to Manhattan for a brilliant sightseeing experience from a whole new point of view?

New York Museum Tour

New York is renowned for its fascinating and varied museums and although you have to purchase tickets to gain entry to most of them, it’s usually well worth the spend. MoMA (Museum Of Modern Art) is a brilliant place to bring the kids, with a constantly rotating exhibition list of mind-bending modern art and free entry for under-16s. History and art nerds will be engrossed in the artefacts on display at the gigantic Metropolitan Museum of Art (free for under-12s) and the American Museum Of Natural History, which houses some of the most spectacular animal specimens you’ll ever lay your eyes on.

The Top of the Rock

The Empire State Building may be more famous, but the 360-degree view of the skyline from the top of the Rockefeller Centre is unrivalled. A standard adult ticket is $37, but there are plenty of discounts and group deals that may suit you better. Whatever time you visit, the view from the 70th floor of this New York Institution won’t be soon forgotten. But it’s especially spectacular at night when you can view The City That Never Sleeps in all its illuminated glory.

Take in a Broadway Show

While you’re in the most dramatic metropolis in the entire United States, an evening spent at one of its many theatres is the icing on the cake of any visit. From the iconic modern classic Wicked to musical of the moment Hamilton, you’ll be spoiled for choice. If all-singing, all-dancing extravaganzas aren’t your thing or your budget doesn’t quite stretch, there are always brilliant quirky off-Broadway productions being staged. You never know, you might discover a 21st century Shakespeare in the making!
