Pay a Contact Q&A
-
What is Pay a Contact?
Pay a Contact is a new, quick and safe way to pay people you know, who also bank with us. With Pay a Contact, you can send or receive money using a mobile number, without having to share International Bank Account Number (IBAN)s. The AIB mobile app links to your contacts, so you can quickly choose someone you want to pay.
-
Do I have to set up Pay a Contact to use it?
You’ll be able to pay any of your contacts who bank with us that have set up Pay a Contact even if you choose not to set it up yourself. But you won’t be able to receive money from others through your mobile number unless you’ve set it up. They’ll still be able to pay you the old way, as long as they have your name and IBAN.
-
Why can’t I link particular accounts to my mobile number to receive payments?
You can only link certain current and deposit accounts to your mobile number. If an account you hold is not visible to select when setting up Pay a Contact, it means this account can’t be linked with your mobile number for receiving payments.
-
How do I send money using Pay a Contact?
To send money using Pay a Contact go to Pay&Transfer>Pay an Irish Account>Pay a Contact, select your contact to pay and input the amount.
-
Can I switch it off?
Yes. Simply go to the Services menu and tap Account Management, then Manage mobile number for payments and switch off the toggle Receive money with your mobile number. If you want to toggle it on again, you can. You can continue to pay your contacts who bank with AIB.
-
How do I change the account my mobile number is linked to for receiving payments?
Simply go to the Services menu, tap Account Management, then Manage mobile number for payments and tap Change and choose from the options available on screen.
-
What about privacy?
Once you set up Pay a Contact, other AIB customers can pay you through your mobile number. They won’t be able to see your bank account number, sort code, IBAN or anything else. The only thing they’ll be able to do with this is pay you.
-
Does this replace direct debits and standing orders?
No, not at all. Pay a Contact is a convenient way to pay people that you know, people who are contacts in your mobile phone and who bank with us. It also works in reverse: it’s an easier way for people that know you to pay you.
-
What if some of my contacts are not AIB customers?
Then you won’t be able to pay them through Pay a Contact. If you select a contact to pay and they do not bank with us, you will get a message with an option to pay them with an IBAN instead.
-
Can I use Pay a Contact to pay bills?
No. It’s designed to help you pay and get paid by your contacts.
-
