Changes to using your card online
Helping protect your card against fraud
When you’re shopping online, we may need to confirm that it’s really you using your card. This is to keep your card secure. Up to now, this was done just by sending you a text with a one-time passcode.
However, over the next coming months, we will start to introduce new ways to confirm it’s you, such as using an app or using a password for online purchases along with a one-time passcode.
When you’re shopping online after you’ve entered in your card details to pay, a Visa screen may appear to ask you to confirm your transaction. The on screen instructions will tell you what to do next.
How to confirm your purchases
When we introduce SCA, there will be two ways for you to confirm your online purchase:
- Using our AIB Mobile Banking App – this is the easiest way to do it
- Setting up a new a password for online purchases to be used alongside a onetime passcode we text to you.
Here’s more about how to set them up:
AIB Mobile Banking app
With the AIB Mobile Banking app you can confirm it’s really you making the purchase with a few taps. It’s easy and secure.
To use AIB Mobile Banking, you'll need to be registered for AIB Phone & Internet Banking.
These changes will happen over the next few months. For a short time, you may still be asked to confirm it’s you by using a one-time passcode for some of your cards until SCA is introduced for all of our cards.
If you are asked to confirm a purchase, the information on the screen will prompt you on what to do.
How to get ready
For business customers, each person who has a card on the account will need to download a new app.
We will tell you more about the app when it is available.
For now, if we need to confirm it’s you, we’ll continue to send you a one-time passcode by text message and you must enter this code to complete your online purchase.
