What is the AIB Card Reader?
A Card Reader is a small hand held device which works with your Debit card to provide unique security codes so you can make certain payments and use some services.

My Card Reader does not have an On/Off button – how does it power on?
If your Card Reader does not have an On/Off button, simply insert your debit card and it will automatically power on for use.

Why do I need an AIB Card Reader?
To complete the following payment services on AIB Phone & Internet Banking an AIB Card Reader may be required:
One Off Transfers
New International Payments (not available through AIB Phone Banking)
Set up a payee
Set up / Amend a Credit Card Bill
Set up a new Standing Order
Remove a Stop on a Cheque
Set up a new Utility Bill
Change PAC
Change an Address
Change a Phone Number
When you select one of these services we will remind you that you need an AIB Card Reader to use the service online.
Logging on to AIB Phone & Internet Banking may require an AIB Card Reader for Strong Customer Authentication (SCA). You will find more information on Strong Customer Authentication on our website, or you can phone our Customer Services team on 0818 664 014.

Will I need my AIB Card Reader to log in to AIB Phone & Internet Banking?
You may need your AIB Card Reader to login to AIB Internet Banking if you have chosen Card Reader as part of Strong Customer Authentication (SCA).

How can I order an AIB Card Reader?
You can order your AIB Card Reader through the 'Services & Settings' section on AIB Internet Banking/Kiosk Banking or by contacting our Customer Service Team. The AIB Card Reader can be ordered at any time through AIB Internet Banking when you select one of the services which require an AIB Card Reader. We will remind you that you need an AIB Card Reader to use the service and we will give you the option to order it there and then.

When will I receive my AIB Card Reader?
Your AIB Card Reader will be sent to you in the post within 3-4 business days.

I have an AIB Code Card, can I keep using this if I don't order an AIB Card Reader?
From 3 September 2019 you will no longer be able to use your code card for payments, and you’ll need a card reader instead. You can order one through the ‘Services & Settings’ section on AIB Internet Banking, or by contacting our Customer Services team. There is no charge for your first Card Reader.

I received my AIB Card Reader; what do I do now?
Before you use your AIB Card Reader for the first time, you must nominate the AIB Debit Card that you wish to you use in conjunction with your AIB Phone & Internet Banking by following the steps below:
Log in to AIB Internet Banking
Select 'Services & Settings'
Select the 'Card Reader'
Click on 'Select your AIB Debit Card' and click 'Next'
Follow the instructions to activate the AIB Debit Card you wish to use.
AIB Phone Banking only customers can call one of our Customer Service Advisers on 0818 724 724 (+353 1 7712424 from outside of Ireland) to activate.

How do I use my AIB Card Reader?
Once you have nominated the AIB Debit Card you wish to use with your AIB Card Reader, you will be prompted to use your AIB Card Reader when completing certain transactions and functions of AIB Phone & Internet Banking.
After inserting your AIB Debit Card into your AIB Card Reader, you will be requested to select a particular function on your AIB Card Reader. You will then be requested to enter your AIB Debit Card PIN into your AIB Card Reader.
The function requested will depend on the service which you are completing within AIB Phone & Internet Banking. Simply follow the onscreen instructions for the particular service you are using to complete your transaction.

How do I enter the payment amount on my AIB Card Reader?
You should enter the payment amount including decimals when requested on your AIB Card Reader.
Please note if you are making a payment using Japanese Yen (JPY), you will need to enter the payment amount including the decimal place '.00' on your AIB Card Reader. For example: 100Yen will be entered to your AIB Card Reader as 100.00. -
I have an urgent payment to complete but I cannot find my AIB Card Reader, what should I do?
The AIB Card Reader device is not unique to each user and can be shared by customers. If you have an urgent payment or service which requires an AIB Card Reader you can borrow another user's AIB Card Reader device to complete your transaction using your own AIB Debit Card.
If you lose your AIB Card Reader, you can order a subsequent device, either through the 'Service & Settings' section on AIB Internet Banking or by contacting our Customer Service Team. There is a fee of €5.50 for each additional/replacement AIB Card Reader ordered.

My AIB Card Reader has requested me to 'Enter PIN'; what is this?
This is the PIN associated with your nominated AIB Debit Card. This is the same PIN that you use at ATMs or when purchasing items using your AIB Debit Card.
If you enter the PIN incorrectly you will have 2 more attempts to enter the correct PIN. If you cannot remember your PIN, please contact +353 1 2695022 to order a PIN Reminder.
Once you receive your reminder AIB Debit Card PIN or if you subsequently remember your PIN you can go to most AIB ATMs to 'unlock' it. Simply insert your card, select the 'PIN Service' options and follow the instructions.

Can I use someone else's AIB Card Reader?
Yes. The AIB Card Reader is a shareable device. It uses the chip on your AIB Debit Card to generate codes unique to you.

I have received a replacement AIB Debit Card; can I continue using this with my AIB Card Reader?
Yes. Your AIB Internet Banking screen will ask you to confirm you are using your new AIB Debit Card. Simply tick the box to confirm and complete the transaction using your new AIB Debit Card. As this is a replacement card you can use your existing PIN.

My AIB Debit Card was lost/stolen, what should I do?
Call 1800 24 22 27 (or +353 1 2695022 from outside of Ireland) immediately to report your card lost or stolen. A new AIB Debit Card and PIN will be sent to you at your address on our system.
While you are waiting for your new card, you will continue to have access to AIB Phone & Internet Banking; however any service which requires an AIB Card Reader will not be available until you activate your new AIB Debit Card for use with your AIB Phone & Internet Banking.
When you receive your new AIB Debit Card you will need to re-activate your AIB Card Reader though the 'Service & Settings' section on AIB Internet Banking or by contacting our Customer Service Team.

Yes. If you would like to order a device designed for our visually impaired customers, please contact our Customer Service Team.

Is there a charge for my AIB Card Reader?
There is no charge for your first AIB Card Reader. There is a fee of €5.50 for each additional/replacement AIB Card Reader ordered.

The IBAN that I am making a payment to does not have 8 digits, what do I do?
Simply enter all the numeric digits which appear in the International Bank Account Number (IBAN).

My AIB Card Reader is not working, what should I do?
If your AIB Card Reader is not working, please make sure you have:
Removed the plastic tab on the battery compartment
Inserted your AIB Debit Card correctly i.e. chip facing downwards.

Can I change the battery on my AIB Card Reader?
Yes, your AIB Card Reader is operated using two CR2032 batteries. To replace, use a pen to unlock the battery compartment located at the bottom of your AIB Card Reader.

Why does my AIB Card Reader display 'Wrong PIN' after I insert my AIB Debit Card?
The text 'Wrong PIN' is displayed after inserting your AIB Debit Card when the wrong AIB Debit Card PIN was entered the last time you attempted to use your AIB Card Reader.
The text 'Wrong PIN' will flash on the AIB Card Reader for a number of seconds before prompting you to enter your AIB Debit Card PIN. Please ensure that you enter the correct PIN so that you don't lock your AIB Card Reader for use with your AIB Phone & Internet Banking.
The text 'Wrong PIN Last Try' will appear on AIB Card Reader when you have one more attempt at entering your PIN before it is locked for use with your AIB Phone & Internet Banking. -
What happens if I enter the wrong code from my AIB Card Reader?
If you enter the wrong code five times into AIB Internet Banking, the Card Reader will lock and you will need to call our Customer Service Team to unlock your Card Reader.

I have locked my AIB Debit Card PIN, can I still access AIB Phone & Internet Banking?
If you have accessed your online banking with SCA in the last 90 days, you can log into Internet Banking to check balances and recent transactions and make payments to existing beneficiaries and bills.

Error Message: Pin Locked Contact Bank
This message is displayed when you have entered an incorrect Debit Card PIN into the AIB Card Reader on 3 or more occasions. It means your PIN has been locked and you will be unable to use your card with your PIN until your PIN is unlocked.

Error Message: The details you have entered are incorrect Ref: CRG 400
You have entered the wrong code into AIB Phone & Internet Banking. Please remove the card from the Card Reader and start the process again, carefully following the instructions on the screen.

Error Message: The details you have entered are incorrect. Ref: CRG405
The Card Reader has been locked due to 5 or more invalid attempts when entering the code into AIB Phone & Internet Banking. Please call our Customer Service Team to unlock your Card Reader. Please call our Customer Service Team, who will be able to help.

Error Message: You need to update your card reader settings. (Ref: CRC302)
The Visa Debit Card has not been activated for use in the Card Reader.

Error Message: You need to update your Security Settings. (Ref: CRC301)
You are trying to enrol for SCA with a Card Reader however you do not have a Visa Debit Card. Please call our Customer Service Team at (0818) 724 724 or +353 1771 2424 for more assistance.

The challenge code from the card reader that was presented on the screen has now expired. You will need to re-enter another Challenge Code from the Card Reader.

Code Cards won’t work after 3 September 2019. You will have to use a Card Reader instead.
