Before opening a bank account with AIB Bank we will need you to provide acceptable proof of identity and proof of address.

Proof of Identification Requirements

In order to comply with legislation to combat money laundering and terrorist financing, we’ll need to verify both your identity and your current permanent address when you are opening a Personal Bank Account. You will need to provide the original of one Photo ID and one Proof of Address and if you’re not currently resident in Ireland, you will need to provide two proof of address documents. In order to comply with our obligations under legislation, we may, at our discretion at any time seek further information and documentation from you to verify your identity.

Suitable Proof of Photographic Identification:

  • Current Valid Signed Passport

  • Current Valid Passport Card

  • Current Valid Travel Document

  • Current Valid EU/EEA Driving Licence– must contain photograph (Irish Provisional accepted)

  • Current EU National Identity Card

Please note the photo and expiry date must be clearly visible.

Suitable Proof of Address:

Documents must be issued to you at your home address within the past 6 months

For example:

  • Utility Bill e.g. telephone, mobile, gas, electricity, heating (where a utility bill is a first bill, a second form of address verification is required)

  • Correspondence from a Regulated Financial Institution operating in the Republic of Ireland (Insurance / Assurance Co., Bank, Building Society, Credit Union, Credit Card Company)

  • Correspondence from a Government Department / Body - Correspondence issued by a Government Department must show evidence of an existing relationship between the customer and the relevant Government Department. Please note; that in order to be acceptable as proof of address the correspondence cannot be the first letter received in the course of establishing a relationship i.e. a PIN letter Acceptable documents: Polling/Electoral Cards (only valid until the date of election), Certificates issued by the Revenue this can be accepted in either original or electronic form.Any correspondence received that does not establish that an existing relationship exists between the customer and the relevant government body i.e. A PPS Letter issued by the Irish Client Identity Services Department, A Revenue PIN letter issued by the Revenue.

  • Additional documents can be accepted for 3rd Level Students - Refer to your local Student Officer

Note: If you’re not currently resident in Ireland, you will need to provide two proof of address documents. In order to comply with our obligations under legislation, we may, at our discretion at any time seek further information from you regarding your account opening request, and also seek further documentation from you to verify your identity. Please contact us to discuss your requirements in advance of your branch visit.

The name on your photographic identification (e.g. name on your passport) must exactly match the name on your proof of address (e.g. full name on your gas bill).

If you are opening an account for a child as a Parent / Guardian you will need to provide the child’s Birth Certificate or the applicable Court Order (or other relevant documentary evidence) in order to prove Parenthood / Guardianship. We also need suitable documentation to verify your identity and that of your child and proof of your residential address as detailed above.

Photocopies of documents are not acceptable.
