A guide on

how to reduce fees and charges

How to reduce fees and charges for personal accounts

  • Use contactless (card or device), tapping is currently free.
  • Use your debit card when buying. It’s cheaper than writing cheques or taking an equivalent value of cash out of an ATM .
  • Get cashback (where available) to get two transactions for the price of one.
  • Use an ATM rather than writing a cheque or taking money out over the counter.

Use our mobile app or Phone & Internet Banking to:

  • Pay other people and your bills, transfer money and check your balance on the mobile app or through Internet Banking. It’s cheaper than writing a cheque or taking money out over the counter.
  • Pay bills by direct debit. This will save money and help pay bills on time.
  • Set up and change standing orders for free.
  • Keep enough money in the account to cover direct debits and avoid fees for a transaction that can’t be paid.

How to reduce overdraft borrowing charges

Some overdraft borrowing charges can be reduced or even avoided. Here are some examples:

  • You can avoid incurring referral item charges and unpaid charges by ensuring that your account operates in credit or within your sanctioned limit, if you have one.
  • If you need an overdraft facility, an increase on your agreed existing overdraft limit or where you cannot meet your scheduled loan repayments, you should contact your AIB branch in advance to discuss and agree (in writing) the appropriate arrangements on your account to reflect your requirements.
  • By applying for the facility for a year, even though you might only need it for a shorter period, you can avoid paying additional facility charges later in the year if you require the facility again., the facility fee is charged per annum or each time requested.
