What type of personal current account can be opened online?
New customers that don’t hold any accounts with AIB or who had previously closed accounts with us, can open the following sole current accounts on the mobile app:
- Personal Current Account
- Basic Bank Account
- Graduate Account
- Student Plus Account
- Student Account
- Advantage Account
Existing AIB customers can open the following sole accounts on Internet Banking- Personal Current Account
- Advantage Account

Who can apply for a Personal Current Account or Basic Bank Account online?
New customers that don’t hold any accounts with AIB or who had previously closed accounts with us can open a sole Personal Current Account or Basic Bank Account on the Mobile app if they can prove they:
- Live in the Republic of Ireland
- Are aged 16 and over
- Have a passport (or other acceptable photographic ID)
Existing customers can open a sole Personal current Account more easily via the "Apply & Open" tab on AIB Internet Banking. -
Who can apply for an Advantage Account on AIB Internet Banking?
You must be aged 66 or over and be registered with AIB Internet Banking.

How do I open a Personal Current Account, Basic Banking Account or an Advantage Account online?
New customers can open a Personal Current Account, Basic Bank Account, or Advantage Account on the Mobile appSimply download the app, click “Become an AIB customer” and follow the steps to start the process. You will need to have your passport or ID documents with you.Existing customer can open a Personal Current Account on AIB Internet Banking
- Simply log in to your AIB Internet Banking and select ‘Current Accounts’ within the ‘Apply & Open’ menu.
- Select your desired account from under the ‘Current Accounts’ section. Then simply follow the account opening steps

Can I open a joint account online?
Accounts opened through the mobile app and AIB Internet Banking can only be opened in your sole name. A joint current account, with a maximum of 2 customers can be opened through our electronic application form. This will still require you both to present in branch to verify your identities. If you require a joint account with more than 2 customers, you will need to visit any of our branches. Click here for the paper application form and more information on opening a joint account.

How will I know what branch my account has opened in?
Your account will be opened online through AIB Internet Banking in the same branch as your existing AIB accounts. Once your account has opened, you will be able to view the National Sort Code (NSC) of the account on AIB Internet Banking. To view this, simply click on ‘Accounts’ and select the new account. Your NSC, along with your Account Number, Business Identifier Code (BIC) and International Bank Account Number (IBAN), will be listed on this screen. Do any fees apply to the Personal Bank Account?

Will I be able to view my new account on AIB Internet banking?
Yes, you can view your balance and account transactions and transfer money into and out of your account via AIB Internet Banking.

How will I get my statements?
When you open a current account on AIB Internet Banking. You will also be able to view and print your eStatements on Kiosk Banking. You have the option to request paper statements if you wish, please refer to the 'Manage my Statements and Fees' section of the Help Centre for more details.

How will I get my fee advices?
When you open a current account on AIB Internet Banking, you will be automatically signed up for eFee advices. You will be able to view and download your eFee Advices from AIB Internet Banking. You will also be able to view and print your eFee Advices on Kiosk Banking. You have the option to request paper fee advices if you wish, please refer to the 'Manage my Statements and Fees' section of the Help Centre for more details.

If I change my mind, can I close my account?
You can close your account at any time by giving a written instruction to your branch in line with the ‘AIB Personal Current Account Important Information’ leaflet and the Terms and Conditions for Current Accounts and Demand Deposit Accounts.

How can I get free banking when aged 66 or over?
With the AIB Advantage Account you don't have to pay maintenance and transaction fees
You can visit any of our branches to open a new AIB Advantage Account once you are aged 66 or over.
If you already have a Personal Current Account with us, you can change to an AIB Advantage Account by visiting or writing to any branch to tell us you want to move your Personal Current Account to an AIB Advantage Account.
Once a year we will also write to Personal Current Account holders who are aged 66 or over and eligible to move to an AIB Advantage Account. This will be done within a year of turning 66. We will then automatically move these accounts two months after the date we write to the account holder(s).
If you have a joint account, everyone on the account must be aged 66 or over to qualify for an AIB Advantage Account.
