Closing Your Account

If you've decided to close your account, we'll help make the process as simple as possible.

This page explains how to close your personal current, loan and deposit accounts.

If you want to close a mortgage, overdraft, credit card or another type of credit, please visit a branch where a branch representative will be able to help you.

What do I do before closing my account?

If the account has a card, stop using it and don’t make any payments from the account for a few days before you plan to close it.

Cancel or change any direct debits and standing orders you still need to another account. This will prevent any payments being missed which could affect your credit history.

To close your account, you must clear any remaining balance, including any amounts you owe. You can do this using any of the options below.

the AIB mobile app,
Internet Banking, or
a self-service kiosk in a branch.

If this is a joint account and you chose a signing instruction other than ‘any one to sign’ both or all account holders must visit a branch to close the account.

You might like to download a statement for the account before it closes. Statements will be unavailable online from one working day after it closes.

The only accounts that you can close online are the Online Saver, Online Notice Deposit 7 and Personal Demand accounts. To close these accounts through Internet Banking, you can follow the below steps:
1. Log in to our online banking service.
2. Click on Accounts, then Account Management.
3. Select Close Account.
4. Follow the instructions.
The Online Notice Deposit 7 Account can also be closed through the AIB Mobile App.

To close an Online Notice Deposit 7 account, we need 7 days’ notice to close it. For more information visit Online Notice Deposit 7.
You can close all accounts, including current accounts, by writing to or visiting any branch. Find out more information on branch opening times.
1. To close any of your accounts in branch: Visit your local branch
2. You will need proof of ID to close your account in a branch. For more information on proof of identification, please see our Q&A below.
3. You can pay any fees on the account before you close it either online or in the branch. We can give you the closing balance on the day you are closing the account. Account Fees and Service Charges (PDF, 1 page, 1,196KB).
4. We’ll send you a closing statement about 10 working days after the account closes.

Question and Answers

You can close your Online Saver through internet banking or in one of our branches.

To close your Online Saver online you must log into your AIB Internet Banking profile and click on 'Account Management'. We will ask you to select another account on your Internet Banking Profile to which we will transfer your Online Saver balance and any interest on it. Your Online Saver account will then close.

Alternatively, you can post a letter to your account holding branch.
You cannot close your account before the end of your term. If you want to close your account at the end of the term, you will need give us maturity instructions. You can ask us to set this up, either when you first put money into the account, or at any time during the term up to the business day before the term ends. This can also be done through the AIB Mobile App. You can ask us to end the agreement within 14 days of opening the account or on reinvestment at the end of the term. We will not charge you to close the account, however, we will not pay you interest for the time you were invested.
If you have opened this account online, under the Distant Marketing Directive, you have the right to withdraw from and cancel the agreement without penalty within 14 days of opening the account.

* You can close your account online at any time, through your AIB Internet Banking Profile, by using the 'Close Account' function. Alternatively, you can close your account by sending a written instruction to an AIB branch near you.

* If you cancel or terminate the agreement, we will pay you interest on the money you have deposited in your Online Saver up to the date you withdraw it.
If you have opened this account online, under the Distant Marketing Directive, you have the right to withdraw from and cancel the agreement without penalty within 14 days of opening the account.

You can close your account online, through your AIB Mobile App or AIB Internet Banking Profile by using the 'Close Account' function and giving us 7 days' notice.

If you want to close your account immediately within 14 days of account opening, as per your entitlement under the Distant Marketing Directive, please call 0818 724 724 (Monday - Sunday 9:00 to 17:000), or write to your branch to tell us you want to close the account.

If you close the account, we will pay you interest on the money you have in your Online Notice Deposit 7 up to the date you take it out.
You can use one of the following valid proof of IDs
- Passport
- Passport Card
- EU/EEA Driving Licence – with photograph
- EU National Identity Card
To help us process your request, please include:
- Your full name
- Your account number or IBAN for the account being closed
- Your contact details
- Instructions for any remaining balance including account details for transfer of remaining balance
- Your signature/signatures of all account holders
